The axle size and count for your trailer is determined by the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the trailer and the completed home built on it. Standard trailers typically offer single, tandem, triple, or quad axle options, each with a standard weight rating of 5,100lbs, 7,000lbs, or 8,000lbs. Most Tiny Home RV/Travel Trailers are built based on a 7,000lbs per axle weight. Your Tiny Heirloom team will engineer and draft your tiny home trailer plans and then calculate the appropriate axle size and count. If your trailer is overbuilt, meaning the axle size is too small or the GVW/GVWR exceeds the maximum rating, you could face potential issues such as: A. Risk of the trailer overturning during travel due to imbalanced weight ratios B. The trailer frame or axles could bow and fail, leading to significant structural damage or total loss C. If a police officer, state trooper, or Department of Transportation inspector determines your trailer exceeds its maximum weight capacity during any form of roadway travel, you could face hefty fines, impoundment, or loss of license.
